For many patients, wearing glasses or daytime contact lenses can feel inconvenient or limiting. Orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K, offers a non-surgical solution that corrects vision while you sleep. At Factoria Eye Clinic, we take this treatment to a higher level of precision with advanced tomography mapping, Pentacam technology, and completely custom lens designs—helping our patients achieve exceptional comfort, clarity, and results.
Ortho-K lenses are rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight. While you sleep, the lens temporarily reshapes the front surface of the cornea so that incoming light focuses more accurately on the retina. When you remove the lens in the morning, most patients can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
Ortho-K works through hydraulic (fluid) forces in your natural tear layer. When the lens is on the eye, it creates a precisely designed space between the back of the lens and the cornea. The tears in that space act like a thin fluid cushion. As the lens settles and tears move into a new pattern overnight, that fluid shift creates gentle, controlled pressure gradients—like tiny hydraulic forces—that guide the cornea’s surface cells (the epithelium) into a temporary new shape.
At Factoria Eye Clinic, we use tomography to get a complete 3D view of the cornea. Ortho-K relies on extremely precise changes, so this detailed information allows us to design and refine treatment with greater accuracy.
We design Ortho-K lenses using the Pentacam, which provides detailed tomographic measurements from the start. With better data, we can often improve lens centration and stability, increase comfort, support more consistent clarity, and make results more predictable.
Unlike standard approaches that rely on trial lenses, we create a fully custom lens design based on your tomography measurements. This level of customization allows us to optimize both comfort and visual performance from day one.
Ortho-K lenses are designed with two key zones:
Treatment zone (center): gently reshapes the central cornea to improve nearsightedness.
Return zone (around it): shapes the mid-peripheral cornea, which is important for myopia management.
These zones control tear thickness and tear movement, which in turn controls the hydraulic forces that reshape the cornea.
The size and shape of the treatment zone can greatly influence comfort and vision quality. An improperly sized zone can cause glare, halos at night, fluctuating vision, or less comfortable lens wear. With fully custom lenses, we can fine-tune the treatment zone to better match your cornea and visual needs, improving both comfort and visual consistency.
The best results come from precise measurements, a lens designed specifically for your eye, and careful control of the fluid forces that create overnight reshaping. Our fully custom Ortho-K designs optimize comfort, clarity, and myopia-management outcomes.
