Exciting New Options for Keratoconus and other irregular corneas

Are your contact lenses uncomfortable?  Do they slide around or maybe pop out sometimes?  Are you not able to wear them for as many hours as you would like?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be quite pleased with some of the newer options.  In the past few years there are new lenses in three different categories, all of which are a vast improvement over what was available a few years ago.  For mild to moderate keratoconus there are now soft lenses that can be a very nice, comfortable option.  Hybrid lenses (rigid center/soft skirt) have been available for keratoconus for several years but recent advancements make them a much healthier than previous versions.  But the biggest game-changer has been scleral lenses.  Scleral lenses can often be an alternative to patients who may have otherwise been faced with corneal transplant.  Scleral lenses are great for all types of irregular corneas.  They are also considered a treatment for dry eye--so they have the added benefit of keeping your corneas moist throughout the day.  If you are wondering if any of these lenses might be right for you, our office would be happy to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kaufman to go over your options.
